Yasmine Fouad, Egypt's environment minister, met with several financiers and executives from businesses that are involved in the waste-to-energy industry on Sunday.
Fouad reviewed the actions that have been taken in this regard up to that point, outlining the chances for the private sector to invest in the waste system in the areas of collection, transportation, recycling facilities, and the conversion of waste into energy, noting that guidelines have been prepared for the mechanism for carrying out projects in this area.
As the first station for turning waste into electric energy was started in Abu Rawash in the Giza Governorate, the minister stated that the government had finished setting the final form and formula for operating contracts. Several locations were suggested in which these projects could be implemented.
After hearing from investors about their concerns in this area and their thoughts, especially after the project had been underway for two years, Fouad took several actions. The minister explained the methodology, the steps used to sign contracts in this area, and the function of the relevant state authorities.
She added that the Ministry of the Environment was eager to work with all of its partners to research the best options and make the choices required to set the environment up for the implementation of this kind of project.
